Alti Expedition Chamber

Essential Technology for High-Altitude Safety

Product made to order - email us for more info

ALTI is an ultralight, portable hyperbaric chamber designed for outdoor and high-altitude use. It allows for a temporary increase in internal air pressure, simulating the effect of a rapid descent to a lower altitude and improving user comfort in high-altitude environments.

The product is not a medical device and is not intended for medical treatment or diagnosis. ALTI is expedition equipment intended to support comfort and safety in situations where immediate descent is not possible and should be used only by individuals who understand the risks associated with high-altitude exposure.

Product Overview

This Alti chamber is specifically engineered for reliability and is suitable for repeated use on demanding expeditions. It is designed to simulate altitude descent conditions for temporary comfort support during rest periods at real high altitude.

Key Technical Specifications
  • Dimensions: 225 cm (L) × 75 cm (W) × 55 cm (H).
  • Weight: Remarkably light at only 1 kg (chamber only).
  • Internal Volume: Approx. 600 L of internal volume.
  • Fabric: High-tenacity nylon coated with durable TPU.
  • Closure System: Heavy-duty, airtight zipper.
  • Attachment Loops: 10 mm wide non-fraying polyamide webbing.
  • Window: Clear TPU film for visibility and communication.
Usage & Performance Metrics

The Alti Equipment chamber is designed for rapid deployment and reliable operation in demanding environments, providing pressure conditions equivalent to a rapid altitude descent for temporary comfort support at real high altitude.

Pump compatibility

Fully compatible with standard air pumps (recommended: Flextail Max 3 or a reliable standard foot pump).

Pressure specifications

  • Tested pressure: up to 15 kPa, equivalent to approximately 2000 m of altitude difference
  • Recommended operational pressure: 10 kPa, equivalent to approximately 1500 m of altitude difference

Inflation times

  • Electric inflation to 5 kPa (~750 m equivalent): approx. 1:30 min
  • Manual inflation from 5 kPa to 10 kPa (max pressure): approx. 2:00 min
Note: Manual pumping is required to exceed 5 kPa.

Air management

  • The chamber allows air refresh through both internal valves and partial zipper release.
  • Air refresh cycle: Release the zipper for approx. 1:30 min every 30 minutes maximum.

User convenience

  • A clear window allows easy visual monitoring and enables touchscreen use inside.

Securing

  • Equipped with a clip attachment point for securing the chamber only (not intended for suspension or lifting).
Preparation & Setup

Find a flat, stable area free from sharp objects and fully unroll the chamber.

Padding

If available, place padding underneath (e.g. a sleeping mat) to improve insulation and user comfort.

Setup

Position the chamber on the padding and connect the pump to the valve.

Securing

Use the attachment loops to stabilize the chamber and prevent unwanted movement during use.
(Loops are not designed for lifting, suspension, or load-bearing.)

Essentials

Place commonly used personal items inside, such as a pee bottle, phone, altimeter watch, water, warm clothing, and other necessary personal gear.

Inflation

Have the user enter the chamber with all items inside, fully close the airtight zipper, and begin steady pumping.

Monitoring

Use an altimeter or pressure gauge to continuously monitor the internal pressure.

Pressure management

Maintain a maximum pressure of 10 kPa. Continuous pressurization should not exceed 30 minutes without an air refresh.

Air refresh

To refresh internal air, slightly open the zipper for approximately 1:30 minutes, then immediately reseal it before continuing use.

Deflation

To end the session, gradually reduce pressure using the relief valve or by slowly opening the zipper.

Safety

Ensure constant visual and verbal communication with the user inside the chamber at all times.

Post-use care

After use, remove all contents, turn the chamber inside out, and hang it in a well-ventilated area until completely dry.

General Safety Guidelines

Always ensure there are no sharp or abrasive objects inside or around the chamber that could damage the material.

Use the chamber only in a stable, safe location on flat ground.

Secure the chamber to prevent unwanted movement during use.

Never move, lift, or suspend the chamber while it is in use.

Attachment points are for restraint only and are not designed for lifting or load-bearing.

Do not overinflate. Maximum allowable pressure is 10 kPa. Do not exceed this limit.

Inflate and deflate the chamber gradually and in a controlled manner.

Always maintain clear visual and verbal communication with the user inside the chamber.

Recommended inflation methods are a hand pump, foot pump, or Flextail Max 3.

Discontinue use immediately if the user experiences discomfort.

Do not tamper with valves, seams, or zippers.

Inspect the chamber before each use. Check for cuts, abrasions, wear, or damage that could affect safe operation.

Ensure all operators are competent, attentive, and in an appropriate condition to carry out their role.

About us.

Makalu Expedition

Alti Equipment was created from a simple idea: to build equipment that truly makes a difference in demanding environments. Whether developing new concepts or refining proven ideas for the modern era, our focus is always the same — using high-quality materials and thoughtful construction methods that help users go further with greater confidence.

Founder Matthew Scholes works closely with experienced high-altitude mountaineers from around the world. Together, we source premium materials and collaborate with trusted manufacturers to create durable, purpose-driven equipment designed for real expedition use.

Our first product is an ultralight hyperbaric chamber, developed to be lightweight, compact, and practical for use at high altitude. By prioritizing portability and simplicity, we aim to make altitude comfort support more accessible on expeditions — without adding unnecessary weight or complexity to the gear you carry.

Why Alti Equipment?

We chose to develop hyperbaric chambers because we believe they were a good idea that had been left behind. Decades ago, outdoor fabrics and manufacturing technologies were still in their early stages, making this type of equipment heavy, bulky, and impractical for most expeditions.

Fast forward to today, and nearly every category of outdoor gear has evolved — becoming lighter, more compact, and easier to transport than its predecessors from the 1980s.

Historically, the size and weight of hyperbaric chambers made them difficult to carry, which often meant they were simply not available when conditions demanded additional comfort or support at altitude.

Today, carrying a 1 kg hyperbaric chamber in a duffel bag or even a day pack is a realistic option. Its compact size makes it feasible to bring onto the mountain or into remote environments — ensuring it is available where and when it can be practically used.

For guides, small teams operating in remote areas, and larger expeditions seeking a reusable, non-consumable pressure-based support option at altitude, the Alti Chamber offers a lightweight and practical addition to expedition equipment.

Important Notice

We strongly recommend that users educate themselves about the realities and risks of high-altitude environments before purchasing or using any Alti Equipment product. Exposure to altitude involves inherent risks, and the use of an Alti Equipment chamber does not eliminate or reduce these risks, nor does it replace standard safety practices, planning, or personal responsibility.

Improper use of expedition equipment may result in serious injury. Users are responsible for ensuring correct setup, operation, and supervision at all times.

Alti Equipment does not accept liability for injury or damage resulting from improper use, misuse, or use outside the intended scope of the product.

Regulatory Status & Safety Information

This product is not a medical device and has not been approved for medical use. It is sold exclusively as non-medical expedition equipment for recreational use.

Important Safety Rules

  • No sharp objects inside or around.
